Horror Fiction Club

Horror Fiction Club (K022) is an Enrichment Programme Unit for students who enjoy cinema and literature related to horror.

 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this unit, students should be able to:

  • acquire a general understanding of how horror stories reflect certain contemporary issues such as politics, human psychology, capitalistic society and so on
  • gain theoretical tools on how to insightfully interpret such stories
  • appreciate the reciprocal influence of our culture and such stories 
  • develop critical tools 
  • compare different traditions of horror
  • discern how the genres can provide critiques of our society with tentative ethical solutions
  • discern the interactive relationship of these genres with history, psychology, sociology, and philosophy

Maximum marks possibly earned in this EPU: 5 marks 

 

Further details

Students are required to read the short story or novella, or watch the film to be discussed in the next session, as well as participate in the discussion on that text or film.

The unit shall be structured as follows:

  • 1 x 1.5hr introductory session on horror in film and literature
  • 1 x 1.5hr session on psychological theories of horror
  • 5 x 1.5hr discussion sessions on horror short stories and novellas
  • 3 x 1.5hr discussion sessions on horror films 


Additional benefits

  • Can provide further insight and critical tools into the analysis of literary texts in English
  • Can provide ideas for an SOK project, provided the students speak with the SOK Coordinator
  • Can motivate and refine creative writing skills

 

Conditions 

  • Registration is on a first come, first served basis.
  • Minimum number of participants to run the unit is 4 and the maximum is 15.
