Foundations of Drawing and Painting

Foundations of Drawing and Painting (K020) is an Enrichment Programme Unit for students who would like an introduction to the basics of drawing and painting or would need further practice in some technical areas. It is also intended for students who are not studying the subject but have an interest in it. 

 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this unit, students should be able to:

  • Illustrate a proficient application of the basic elements and principles of art and design
  • Develop studies based on direct observation from life and reflections of personal experiences
  • Work in several dry and wet media, including: pen, charcoal, pastels and paints
  • Understand the purpose of a working journal and use it continuously as part of the creative process
  • Evaluate their work and that of other artists.

Further details

Following an introduction to the sessions, this EPU shall explore:

  • Basic techniques to drawing and painting from life - symmetrical objects, ellipses, perspective, rendering of textures
  • Landscape drawing and painting - textures, layering, perspective
  • Life Figure Drawing Sessions - proportions, angles, movement, foreshortening

 

Additional benefits

  • May be used part of an SOK project provided that the students attend and participate during all sessions, if approved by the SOK Coordinator
  • Sustains Advanced Art and Intermediate Art students in the transition from Secondary school to 6th Form
  • Supports and guides students who would like to advance in their drawing and painting skills 


Conditions

  • Student registration is on a first come first served basis, however students who are reading for an Art course at advanced and intermediate level will be given priority. 
  • Students must actively participate during the sessions and keep up with the weekly class commitment. 
  • A minimum of 6 students is required to run the unit with a maximum of 15 students. 

 

Registration/Participation fees 

No registration fees are required, however students need to get their own tools and materials that will be communicated to them via email prior to the commencement of the unit.
