Advanced Matriculation Biology Practicals – practical workbook preparation and Paper III and Paper IV practice

Learners who would like to take the MATSEC, Advanced Matriculation (AM), Biology examination in May 2026, but have no access to laboratory facilities.

Applicants who are studying or have studied Biology at Advanced level.

This course will help learners to:

  • obtain the required number of practicals forming the practical workbook which will be certified by qualified tutors, in fulfilment of the MATSEC (AM) Biology Paper IV examination as listed in syllabus.
  • obtain knowledge about different practical techniques, compilation, analysis and discussion of results, and biological drawings, which will help learners successfully undertake Papers III and IV of the AM Biology examination.
  • The Biology practicals will be held on Wednesdays from 17:00 till 20:00. Commencement date will be 7 January 2026.
  • A fieldwork session will be held during the day on Wednesday 4 March 2026 (date might change depending on weather conditions).
  • The course will assume that learners are familiar with the theoretical knowledge required for each session.
  • The practical sessions will cover a comprehensive range of biological investigations, including microscopic techniques, enzymatic activity experiments, animal and plant physiology investigations, experimental design and field techniques.
  • Learners will complete the obligatory MATSEC practical workbook, as well as gain hands-on experience to be able to sit for Paper IV; and will also gain the necessary skills to be able to sit for Paper III. 
  • A certificate of participation, as well as practical writeups for eligibility to sit for Paper IV, will be awarded to learners who successfully complete the course. 
  • Applicants choosing the course must attend all sessions to ensure that they are eligible to sit for the MATSEC Biology Paper IV examination session. 
  • Each practical session will be allotted 10 marks.
