Computing Intermediate is intended as a natural progression from SEC level Computing and covers a reasonable and coherent portion of the MATSEC Advanced level Computing syllabus. It is aimed at eliciting roughly one third of the effort required for the Advanced level, however it is not a Computer Appreciation or Applications course. 
No, however the student would benefit if in possession of such qualification. 
Although related, these are two different subjects. Information Technology is more geared for students who seek a subject to complement their main area of studies, e.g., when opting to pursue studies in business. If a student aims to pursue studies in areas such as engineering, programming, etc., then Computing is the subject to opt for. It is strongly advised that students check all the details of the course they would like to pursue at undergraduate level (through the University of Malta website) to ensure that they meet the entry requirements. 
Lecturers assume that all students are new to the subject. Therefore programming is taught from scratch. 
Having a sound knowledge would help. However, it would be ideal if the student possesses good problem-solving skills.
