Junior Curators at the Biology Specimen Museum

Junior Curators at the Biology Specimen Museum (X009) is an Enrichment Programme Unit for students who are interested in the conservation of specimens.

 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this unit, students should be able to:

  • catalogue specimens for easy reference
  • identify the major animal and plant groups to which the specimen belongs
  • apply basic conservation skills in preservation of wet mounted specimens
  • show visitors round the museum
  • give relevant information about the museum specimens to visitors.

Typically one hour twice a week.

Proposed day and time

The sessions will take place in accordance with availabilities of the timetables of students and the tutors involved.

Maximum marks possibly earned in this EPU: 25 marks 

 

Further details

The students involved will have a 2 hr introductory session, 22 hrs of service at the Biology Specimen Museum and finally 1 hr of conclusion and evaluation of the experience. During the hours of service, students are expected to catalogue specimens for easy reference, identify the major animal and plant groups to which the specimen belongs, apply basic conservation skills in preservation of wet mounted specimens, show visitors round the museum and give relevant information about the museum specimens to visitors. 


Additional benefits

May be used as an SOK project subject to the approval of the SOK Coordinator.  The Junior Curators may also be involved in voluntary work with other local museums.

 

Conditions 

  • A maximum of 10 students are required to run the unit.
  • Students must register through the link below. However, the registration to the unit is through an interview once you apply below.
  • Advanced level biology students shall be given preference.
  • Students must bring their lab coats, safety spectacles and their own device (laptop or tablet) for data compiling.
