JC Herbarium (X012) is an Enrichment Programme Unit for students who are following advanced biology and have a love of plants.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this unit, students should be able to:
- recognize and name local plant species using field guides and classification tools
- understand taxonomy by grouping plants into families, genera, and species.
- develop keen attention to detail by noting plant features like leaf shape, flower structure, and habitat.
- learn about plant organs (roots, stems, leaves, flowers) and their functions.
- accurately document plant characteristics, location, and date of collection.
- learn techniques for pressing, drying, and mounting plants properly.
- create visually appealing herbarium pages with clear labels and notes.
- gain familiarity with tools like field guides, magnifying glasses, and plant presses.
- take ownership of tasks and care for collected materials.

Further details
Activities include: i) collection of specimens from the field, ii) updating the collection and iii) mounting and fixing collected specimens.
The 20 hours shall be divided as follows:
- 1 hour introductory session
- 19 x 1 hr activities
Additional benefits
- Students might have the opportunity to do some work with Argotti gardens.
- May be used as a SOK project. This needs to be discussed with your SOK lecutrer/Subject Coordinator

- Registration is through an interview.
- Only 2 students will be accepted.
