Applied Physics Workshop

Applied Physics Workshop (X001) is an Enrichment Programme Unit for students who are interested in the hands-on application in everyday life situations of theoretical physics.

 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this unit, students should be able to:

  • apply specific Physics concepts to everyday live situations
  • understand the Physics concepts discussed in class better 
  • have the opportunity to learn some history of science 
  • get to know better particular Physicists 
  • learn to work in groups  (Collaboration and Competition)
  • make new friends and improve verbal communication through team building activities 
  • take care of the spiritual values (Optional mass)
  • learn values like: abstaining from mobile use, be punctual for activities and be creative during activities 
  • get to know their lecturers in a different context than they usually do.

Duration and frequency of sessions

The workshop takes place over a weekend starting on a Friday at 17:00 and ending on Sunday at 14:00.

50 hours

 

Proposed day and time

The weekend will take place some time in the second semester or as communicated by the Physics Subject Coordinator.

 

Marks earned

Maximum marks possibly earned in this EPU: 25 marks 

 

Further details

The workshop is filled with activities such as: team building activities, star gazing, seismic exercise, physics experiments, film on scientists of interest, treasure hunt and various talks by experts in the field.

Conditions 

  • The total number of participants is dependent on the place hosting the group.
  • Student registration is on a first come first served basis.
  • Students are expected to:
  • respect the JC Code of Behaviour at all times
  • be punctual, respectful and observe norms and regulations...
  • dress appropriately
  • fill in all documentation including parental/guardian consent as required.

 

Registration/Participation fees 

A participation fee is required dependent on the place hosting the group. This will be communicated in advance by the Physics Subject Coordinator.
