Arabic is offered at both Advanced and Intermediate levels

Arabic is a key Semitic language spoken by some 150 million people throughout the Middle East and North Africa. Arabic has influenced many other languages and cultures around the globe throughout its history, and is one of the official languages of the United Nations.

The Intermediate Level Course

This course is meant as an extension of the Secondary Education Certificate Examination in Arabic.  It focuses mainly on the communicative nature of the language (i.e. the four language skills), but there will also be some translation tasks to carry out as specified in the MATSEC Intermediate Syllabus. If you follow this course you shall be prepared to use Arabic for practical purposes.  However, the course also teaches you to cultivate an interest in contemporary Arabic culture.

A pass in Arabic at SEC level is recommended to study this subject.

The Advanced Level Course

When studying this subject you will be taught how to handle listening comprehensions and how to speak fluent Arabic on given topics, such as the contribution of youth to society, and the influence of the press.  You will also be trained to be proficient in advanced Arabic grammar and vocabulary.  Where essay writing is concerned, you will learn how to show creativity and ability in dealing with various types of topics. You will also be trained to show ability in reading unpointed Arabic and in supplying all vowel marks on unpointed Arabic text. In addition, you will be studying Arabic civilisation and literature.

A pass in Arabic at SEC level is highly recommended to study the subject further.
