Frequently asked questions

Studying Chemistry at AM level will involve developing fundamentals and concepts of inorganic and physical chemistry encountered at an ordinary level to a much greater depth. In addition, you will have the opportunity to come to grips with organic chemistry. During the weekly practical sessions, you will also learn to respect the materials around you and to handle them safely.  By the end of the course, you should master the chemical knowledge and the practical skills that will help you continue your studies at a tertiary level.
Studying Chemistry at IM level will involve developing fundamentals and concepts of inorganic, physical and organic chemistry encountered at an ordinary level.  The Chemistry Department also offers a two-year course at IM level for those students wanting to increase their level of knowledge of Chemistry, but without the higher degree of commitment required at AM level. Although the IM course does not include a practical component, lectures are supplemented with a range of practical demonstrations.
A SEC (or equivalent) pass at grade 4, or better is recommended for students studying chemistry at AM and IM level.  A lower grade may be considered in consultation with the Subject Coordinator. Moreover, the department strongly recommends a good pass in Mathematics.
You will have 6 lectures and a tutorial a week. Another 2 hours per week will be dedicated to practical work.
You will have 3 lectures a week. Some lectures may be replaced with practical demonstrations.
Assessment is continuous both at AM and IM level. You will be assessed twice a year at the end of January and at the end of May. You will also sit for an exam at the end of the first year.
MATSEC sets two written papers and a practical paper for AM chemistry.
MATSEC sets one written paper for IM chemistry.
Students following the AM chemistry course will carry out weekly practical sessions.  Laboratory work primarily includes qualitative and quantitative experiments. Classes are divided into small groups for practical work, and each student is assigned his/her own workstation.
Although some practicals require group work, you will carry out most practicals on your own under the guidance of your lecturer.
Chemistry at AM level enables you to enrol in several university courses, including but not limited to, courses offered by the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Health Science, the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery and the Faculty of Dental Surgery.
