Welcome to the Junior College Mathematics Department

Why study Mathematics?

Studying mathematics is interesting and stimulating – the solution to a problem gives excitement and satisfaction. Many enjoy its challenge and its clarity. Mathematics is about pattern and structure; it is about logical analysis, deduction, calculation within these patterns and structures. The mathematics of the patterns found-in different areas of science and technology, can be used to explain and control natural happenings and situations.

Mathematics is beautiful

Mathematicians often say this especially when talking about a particular result. The beauty lies, not in the shape of the symbols, but in the concepts. Thus the beauty of Euclid's proof of the infinity of primes lies in its simplicity. The idea that one can show that the list of primes never ends is nothing short of astonishing. Similarly any mathematical formula expresses so much in so few symbols that it can be considered beautiful.

Maths is the language of the universe

Much of modern theoretical physics is mathematics. Quantum Theory and Relativity are mathematical theories that attempt to explain the laws of the universe. Of course Relativity can be summarised in that one, famous mathematical formula: E = mc².

For millennia, mathematics has had a pervasive influence on our everyday lives while making an incalculable contribution to development and to the wealth of every country.
