prepare for and undertake the practical component of the MATSEC Advanced Matriculation Chemistry examination.
The course will focus on practical work and will assume that learners are familiar with the relevant theoretical chemistry.
The practical sessions will cover a comprehensive range of examination-relevant work, including quantitative techniques, thermometric measurements, and inorganic and organic qualitative analysis.
Learners will gain hands-on experience in solution preparation and dilution, titrations, thermometric exercises, accurate recording and processing of results, calculations, inferences, and the identification of unknown substances.
Practical work will reflect the scope and style of the MATSEC Advanced Matriculation Chemistry practical component and will include examination-style practice and a mock practical examination.
A certificate of participation will be awarded to learners who successfully complete the course.
Learners must obtain a minimum overall mark of 50 and attend at least eight (8) sessions for certification to be awarded.
Each practical session will contribute 10% to the overall course assessment.
Marks will be awarded for accurate and precise quantitative results, appropriate recording and processing of data, relevant calculations, correct observations and inferences, identification of substances, and accurate measurement and interpretation of temperature change.
