In Applied Mathematics (Mechanics), mathematics is applied to the study of the motion of physical objects, focusing primarily on the principles of Mechanics. Pure Mathematics is the study of mathematics per se, which may either provide satisfaction without the need of any outside applicative motivation or be later used in various fields of science, technology, and engineering. Applied Mathematics is only offered at Intermediate Level.
To study Applied Mathematics at Intermediate level, a pass (Grades 1-5) in SEC Mathematics is required. It is advisable to be in possession of a good grade in Mathematics at SEC level.
At Intermediate level, you will have three lecturing hours per week.
Topics include forces, momentum, centre of mass, kinematics, energy, and moment of inertia.
No course at University absolutely requires Applied Mathematics at Intermediate level, although it is an optional requirement for the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Earth Systems and Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Applied Food and Nutritional Sciences courses.
