Spanish is the second language most spoken in the world. Studying this foreign language opens wide the opportunities to learn not only the language but also to come in touch with the culture of all the countries where it is spoken. Besides, it gives you the opportunity to work in several fields such as education, tourism, translation and interpretation amongst others. Besides, at present, in Malta there are several Spanish companies who are also recruiting individuals and having a good command of the Spanish language is undoubtedly an asset.
You may start studying Spanish at Advanced or Intermediate level but having prior knowledge of the language is a huge asset. It is strongly recommended that you have a pass at SEC level or equivalent. It is necessary to expose yourself to the language in preparation to the course. Both the advanced and the intermediate courses aim at consolidating the four language skills, that is, speaking, listening, reading and writing. All this is carried out in conjunction with the revision and introduction of new content.
Spanish at Intermediate level aims at consolidating the 4 language skills, that is, speaking, listening, reading and writing. Language is practiced at all times and culture content is embedded during various activities. Prior knowledge is consolidated while new content is introduced.
At Intermediate level, students will study either one literature work or a cultural component in preparation for their MATSEC Intermediate exam.
The Advanced course aims at consolidating the four language skills, that is, speaking, listening, reading and writing. Language is practiced at all times, and culture content is embedded during various activities. Prior knowledge is consolidated while new content is introduced.
At Advanced level, students will study in detail two literature works and an array of cultural topics in preparation for their MATSEC Advanced level examination.
Although MATSEC allows students to sit for examinations after first year, both the Intermediate and Advanced courses are planned to be completed over 2 academic years. Hence, the students would not have completed all the necessary content to sit for the exam. We strongly recommend that a candidate sits for the MATSEC exam at the end of the two-year course.
A set textbook is used for language. A hard copy of the literature work/s is also needed. Other complimentary material shall be handed over to the students when necessary.
