MQF Level 4.

Offered to prospective students who at the time of application are at least 18 years of age or who turn 18 by the end of December (henceforth referred to as 18+ students), with the possibility of studying one or more subjects at Advanced level (AM) and/or Intermediate Matriculation (IM) level according to their needs.

1. Prospective 18+ students enrolling in this programme must be in possession of at least three (3) passes in the Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) Examination or when applicable, their equivalent at Grade 5 or better OR Level 3 (as awarded by MATSEC 2025 onwards). The subjects must include at least one of the following: English Language, Maltese and Mathematics.
2. Applicants who are 23 years old or will turn 23 by the time they finish the course (henceforth referred to adult learners) are exempted from presenting the entry requirements above. Ideally the adult learner is in possession of a SEC level pass in English or a Secure English Language Test (SELT) result, allowing the learner to follow the course with profit.
3. International applicants not in possession of SEC qualifications are to contact the International Admissions Office.

18+ applicants have the opportunity to join this linear study programme either as a first-year or as a second-year students in accordance to their needs:

• applicants choosing to start as first-years shall have a course duration of two (2) years on a full-time basis.
• applicants choosing to start as second-year students shall have a course duration of one (1) year on a full-time basis.

It is not possible to follow first and second-year classes simultaneously.

 18+ applicants and adult learners may choose any one of the options offered:

1. Option A: Matriculation Course (Standard) aimed at obtaining the Matriculation Certificate in adherence to MATSEC regulations.  Students are therefore allowed to choose a maximum of six (6) subjects, two (2) at Advanced Matriculation (AM) level, three (3) subjects at Intermediate Matriculation (IM) level and Systems of Knowledge. Matriculation Course (Standard) conditions apply.
2. Option B: Matriculation Course (Extra) aimed at obtaining the Matriculation Certificate in adherence to MATSEC regulations.  Students are therefore allowed to choose a maximum of six (6) subjects, three (3) at AM level, two (2) subjects at IM level and Systems of Knowledge. Matriculation Course (Standard) conditions apply.
3. Option C: My Choice Study Programme allows learners to take up any number of subjects of their choice for a maximum of five (5). 

General conditions apply.

• In the case of Option B, the registration period for this study programme is limited. Prospective students should be guided by current application dates.
• The material covered in these study programmes presumes a SEC level of competence (if available) in the subject chosen.
• Applicants opting to start the programme as second-year students, are presumed to possess knowledge of the material covered in first-year at JC. Such students shall be joining second-year groups. Projects required by MATSEC that are typically covered/completed in first-year at JC will not be offered in second-year. It is the responsibility of the applicant to fulfil such requirements. Prior promotion to the second-year from JC or any other educational institution is not required.
• In the case of Option B, the registration period for this study programme is limited to the main application period only. Prospective students should be guided by current application dates.
• Students will be able to sit for the MATSEC examinations at the end of the respective programme.
• Prospective adult learners, who would like to present the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), are to contact the UM Students Advisory Services in order to start the RPL process and identify the learning outcomes achieved through prior certified and experiential learning. Applicants are advised to start this process eight (8) months ahead of the deadline for submission of applications.
• Prospective adult learners, who do not hold the entry requirements, may be called in for a selection interview to assess better the qualifications, the choice of subjects and to ensure that they can follow the course with profit.
• Applicants should be aware that in order to study Mathematics, English and Maltese at either Advanced or Intermediate level, they must be in possession of a pass in the subject at SEC level or equivalent. Adult learners should also be aware that for certain UM courses, special requirements may apply.
• 18+ applicants who intend to enrol at the University of Malta after completing their studies at JC and do not qualify as adult learners, must be aware that a SEC pass or equivalent in Maltese, Mathematics and English Language is required in addition to the Matriculation Certificate to complete registration with UM.
• Students may request to be exempted from studying a subject if they are already in possession of a pass in the subject but cannot replace it with another subject.
• Whilst every effort will be made to ensure that prospective students can choose any combination of subjects, the Junior College reserves the right not to offer a particular combination of subjects if the number of applicants does not justify it or if logistics and timetable arrangements do not permit it.
• No changes to the timetable will be allowed once this is set at the beginning of the year.
• All Junior College students are entitled to use the facilities available on the College Campus normally free of charge. Normally facilities need to be booked in advance and are available on a first-come-first-served basis.
• Students must commit themselves to their programme of studies and attend all sessions.
