Evening course for MATSEC Advanced Practical Physics Component
Note: The MATSEC practical session takes 2 hours and carries 80 marks out of 400 marks for the whole examination. Thus the practical carries 20% of the total Advanced Physics examination.
The course will provide students with the practical physics knowledge and skills listed in the MATSEC advanced physics syllabus i.e. In the experimental work, candidates
make and record sufficient measurements,
show full awareness for precision,
analyse experimental data rigorously
Candidates attending this course will be prepared to undertake successfully the MATSEC advanced physics practical examination.
The practicals will have the same format as the MATSEC examination paper and cover all sections of the syllabus. The candidates will do two experiments from each of the following topics: Mechanics, Waves, Optics, Heat and Electricity.
Ten three-hour evening sessions.
Sessions will commence on Monday 20 January 2020.
Sessions will be held every Monday from 17:00 to 20:00 (except on 10 February 2020)
Candidates are expected to have at least SEC level physics knowledge or equivalent. The course will focus on the practical aspects.
Candidates cannot register for this course if they are full-time students registered with the Junior College.
Each practical session will be allotted 80 marks (same as in MATSEC).
Marks will be awarded on correct readings taken, precision in results, plotting of graphs, interpretation of data and precautions taken.
A certificate will be issued if the following requirements are met:
Candidates must attend a minimum of 8 sessions
Candidates must hand in a practical write-up for each session they attend.
