Becoming an Environmental Activist | Part II

Becoming an Environmental Activist | Part II (C019) is an Enrichment Programme Unit for students who would like to be agents of change in relation to environmental issues.

  

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this unit, students should be able to:

  • engage in a practical aspect of being an environmental activist
  • prepare promotional material to promote the Environmental Festival

  • contact and liaise with local environmental NGOs in order to disseminate knowledge on environmental issues during the festival
  • discuss and conclude which activities are to take place during the festival (Compulsory activities are to include speeches prepared and read by students, and the involvement of at least two NGOs)
  • carry out the ground work required for organising the festival: getting the official permission from administration, contacting the NGOs, prepare the speeches, identify the venue, identify and obtain materials required for the event– eg: music, banners/ posters, sound system
  • share the work load involved with the other members of the programme in order to ensure the smooth running of the event
  • carry out a self-evaluation exercise in order to identify the skills acquired after the completion of this programme.

Duration and frequency of sessions

1 or 2 hours every fortnight.

Wednesday at 14:00 but it may be changed in accordance with other available slots.

Maximum marks possibly earned in this EPU: 5 marks 

 

Further details

Students are expected to attend all sessions as outlined here. Details of the sessions may be altered depending on the needs of the students and of the EPU. The unit shall be typically divided as follows: 

  • 1x 2 hours: Discussion: Deciding on the Environmental festival format

  • 2x 2 hours: Preparing the materials and resources required for the festival. Delegating responsibilities.
  • 1x 4 hours: The festival (Preparation/ setting up, speeches, clearing up). Final evaluation.

Participation in the festival is mandatory. Students are meant to collaborate with other participants in the preparations required to organise the festival, and during the festival itself. 


Additional benefits

Subject to the approval of the SOK Coordinator, this unit may be used as part of SOK project if taken up with the EPU: Becoming an environmental activist Part I or if the student is also a member of the Environmental Committee.

  • Full registration is through an interview. Student must register first by clicking REGISTER below to be called in for an interview.
  • Eligible students must have completed the EPU: Becoming an Environmental Activist | Part I to be accepted in this EPU.
